Internship Programme

Your socioeconomic background shouldn’t be a barrier

What we offer

  • Your financial situation shouldn’t be a barrier to you gaining experience. We pay National Living Wage (NLW) to all our interns. NLW applies to those 21 and over, however regardless of age, all our interns will receive NLW.

  • We encourage gaining experience during your studies. To work around your commitments, we offer internships from 1-4 days a week.

  • We’re located between York and Selby, your expenses to travel to the office will be paid each month in advance to alleviate any financial barriers.

  • Our internship programme runs from 4-6 months, allowing you time to study or work alongside, whilst also getting enough time with the team.

  • All our interns work on a freelancing basis. We’ll guide you through how to register with HMRC, how to invoice, preparing for your tax return and the admin around being a sole trader or running a business.

  • Due to the nature of our job, we spend marjory of our working day on computers or screens. If you haven’t had an eye test in the previous year, you’ll be required to have one. The cost and the cost of any glasses/contact lenses needed will be covered by Art is my Career.

  • Several times a year, we bring all our past interns back together so you can meet like minded people at similar stages to you in your career. From pottery painting, Christmas lunches and escape rooms, our support doesn’t end when your internship does.

Maddy Driffill

“During my mentorship I got the chance to have 1-2-1 input and feedback on my portfolio by industry professionals. I learnt what employers would expect to see and learn from a portfolio and how I can showcase my work to best showcase my talent.

I was also able to interact with real clients which created great connections for myself in the industry and taught me how to speak confidently to clients. The most valuable part of the mentorship was being able to elevate myself as a designer, I have gained confidence, skills, time management, communication skills and so much more.

I am now in full-time employment as a Junior Graphic Designer, this mentorship shaped me into the person I am today and prepared me for full-time work. I’m ecstatic to be able to find a position within the industry so quickly, as someone who felt so lost, it means a great deal to me. If I could go back and tell myself one thing, it would be to dive into the deep end quicker, I’d also tell myself that I deserve to be here.”

“My time as an intern gave me the opportunity to work alongside an industry-professional, allowing me to gain first-hand experience working as a graphic designer in the industry. During my internship, I learnt how to interpret a brief and create a wide range of designs, expanding my skills and knowledge with each project.

By working on a variety of projects for real clients, I was able to learn how to understand a client’s vision and needs, create effective designs and how to manage my time efficiently. The experience of interacting with clients directly was incredibly valuable as it gave me confidence in both my communication and in my work - something I struggled with beforehand.

The internship also allowed me to improve my design skills, including the use of tools such as Adobe Illustrator. It helped me to gain a strong foundation in design principles, allowing my designing ability to exceed what I thought would be possible in such a short timeframe.”

Currently, our internship programme is limited to two interns per year. We’re working hard behind the scenes to put a package together in the hope other agencies will adopt the model, to ensure as many people can access paid internships as possible.

Please note: We try to respond to everyone, however please understand we get a lot of requests so this may take us sometime.
